Back to School 2010 - Over 4,000 smiles achieved!

UKF's month long Back to School program for the year 2010 was concluded today, October 21 2010. We wrapped up activities by sharing school supplies to 2,300 happy children at Ojodu Primary School in Lagos. All in all, we reached almost 4,000 happy children this year and spent over N3 million naira. Please see pictures and more news on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/unitedforkids.

United for Kids Foundation trains 25 teachers

On August 18, 2010, 25 teachers from Adebule primary School benefited from an interesting and engaging training class offered by Mrs. Aramide Ademidun. The class titled: Developmentally appropriate practices: Using different materials to help kids learn was provided to the teachers free of charge as part of UKF's efforts to ensure that children from Low/No income families have access to better education. United for Kids Foundation wins $20,000 in Chase Community Giving Competition

After competing with over 500,000 other charities in a very tight race, which began on June 15 2010, United for Kids Foundation (UKF) has emerged as one of the 200 finalists in this summer's Chase Bank Community Giving Competition.

UKF gathered a total of 1,558 votes to finish in the 178th position. We are appreciative of the efforts of all those who took time to vote and campaign for votes on our behalf, and believe that this grant will boost our ability to begin working with many children from low income families in Nigeria who are attending public schools, our goal is to invest in materials that will improve reading, math and information technology skills among the children.

Q2 Financials -Entering our most expensive quarter with $22,000

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the trustees of United for Kids Foundation, I am happy to present our financial results for the second quarter of 2009. We are grateful to the members who have consistently fulfilled their promises to us, your committment in spite of the tough economic times has enabled us stay in the important business of healing Nigeria, and indeed the World, One Child, One Smile and One Heart at a time. May God bless you abundantly!

The results below are made possible by only 50% of our members; as we enter the 3rd quarter of the year (our most expensive because of the school renovation projects and the annual back to school drive), we cannot help but wonder how far we will be able to go if the remaining 50% decide to get back on board. We are eager to reach greater heights this quarter and kindly appeal to everyone to donate generously to help us get there.

As you know, we began trading activities in Q2 with the introduction of the branded wrist bands, our first round of 1000 bands were completely sold out within one week, and the next round will go on sale early next week by God's grace. We intend to continue trading, so please watch out more branded items in the coming weeks!

Thank you very much for helping us record another successful year, because of the wonderful people listed below, we were able to spend over N4.7 million on various life changing projects, this made the year 2008 our most expensive year to date, God bless you all. UKF's Ist Annual Back to School Drive - See Pictures

Its amazing how much $6.25 can do to a child's life. We are happy that our dream of sending almost 2000 kids back to school with hope and love became reality on Sept 20, 23, 24 and 25th. many thanks to the few trustees and staff who made this happen, to KPMG for allowing their employees do this as community service during working hours and to our generous donors. Our hearts are filled with joy and we hope to continue to bless the kids and staff at these public schools by the grace of God.

A Moment like this, some people wait a life time. Don't miss it!

Dear Friends,

Please join us as we happily light up in the hearts and eyes of 2,000 children on Saturday September 20th and from Tuesday September 23rd to Thursday September 25th 2008.

- We will begin at the Ikeja General Hospital Children’s wards (Oba Akinjobi Way, GRA Ikeja, Lagos) on Saturday at 9am with our monthly hospital outreach program. Please come and help us distribute groceries, supplies, hugs and smiles to the children on admission there.
- At 11am on the same day, we will kick off our first annual “UKF – BACK TO SCHOOL” program at the Bab Es Salaam orphanage (14/16 Joel Ogunnaike St, GRA Ikeja). Each child in ECCD and Primary school will receive a school bag, notebooks, pencils, crayons, pens, erasers and rulers. Each child in primary 6 will also receive a mathematical set.
- On Tuesday, we will continue our BACK TO SCHOOL program at Adebule Primary School (1 Olufeko close, Fola Agoro Shomolu Lagos) and the FOMWAN School (17 Abati Street, Akowonjo Alimosho Lagos) at 10:30am.
- On Wednesday, we will move to Wesley and Wright primary schools (12/14 Emmanuel Street, off Palm grove bus stop, Shomolu, Lagos) at 10:30am.
- Our final stop for this year’s “UKF - BACK TO SCHOOL” program will be at the Children’s Transit Home (11/13 Ojerinde Street, behind LUTH, Idi-Araba, Lagos) at 10:30am.

We will like to thank the trustees and staff who have worked tirelessly to make this a reality, and a huge thank you to KPMG Professional services for allowing their employees to participate in the distribution activities…..and to you too, for making this happen through your donations (this program is costing us N1.5million Naira). Its not too late to sign up to join these activities, we know that the moment each child opens their gift will be like a dream come true, a moment many economically disadvantaged children will only dream about.

On a final note, we have exhausted all our funds with the huge projects we have undertaken this year, but we still have a lot more to do: our monthly visits to the hospital, our Xmas and Eid-Kabir parties for the orphanages are still coming up, so please help us by sending in your donations and also spreading the word about our foundation.

N2.5 Million Year to Date... from only 36% of donors!

Dear Friends, On behalf of the trustees of UKF, I will like to present our financial results for the first half of 2008. We have realized ~N2.5m from only 93 of UKF's 256 members, we can only imagine how much we will have to work our 'miracles' if we had 100% participation, we therefore hope and pray that you will defy the economic down turn and spare a change to help us heal Nigeria and indeed the World, one child, one heart and one smile at a time. We are planning bigger and better things for the 2nd half of 2008: our plans include a big back to school drive for kids at FOMWAN, Adebule, Wesley and Wright public primary schools and the Children's Transit Home. We also hope to continue building on our successful dialogue with the Lagos State Government to set up a comfortable location for the CTH kids. Other News:

Our monthly visit to the Ikeja General Hospital took place on Saturday June 21st 2008 thanks to Ngozi, Nini, Atinuke H, Lanre D, Khadijah, Mobola O, Tope YA, Mojisola and Folasade who took time out of their busy schedules to help restore hope in the lives of the sick and poor. After distributing our normal groceries/supplies to the children on admission, we selected 2 patients as this month's beneficiaries of the “UKF Prescription Assistance Program:"
Oyedele Toheed, a 12 year old male patient diagnosed with convulsion and head injury and prescribed with1 gram Roceplin.
Oduwole Oluwafunmilola, a 1 year & 3 month old female patient diagnosed with Hydrocephalus and Kwashokor and prescribed with Cefutoxine and Genitia IVF.
Their prescription drugs have been supplied by Juli Pharmacy, in Ikeja.

We are currently compiling our financial results for the second quarter of the year and will send this along with our calendar shortly.

A million Naira contract, Malnutrition (?) and the Governor heard us...

We are pleased to announce several great things that have happened to us and the kids we help in the last couple of days.

Ikeja General Hospital Monthly visit
We will like to thank the 16 wonderful people who came out to support our monthly relief efforts at the Ikeja General Hospital Children's wards on Saturday May 17th 2008: Ibraheem, Amani, Khadijah, Nini, Toritse, Bimbo B, Bukky & Bukky A, Saheed A, Ngozi and Mommy Adebiyi, Bode D (welcome to the group!), Omobola O, Tope YA, Mama Ariyo, Funke A and Fola. Thank you very much for giving your time to restore hope in the hearts of these kids and their families.

As usual, we delivered groceries to the kids on admission at Ayinke house, the premature babies unit and the other pediatric wards as usual. We also selected two patients (Ayangbade Usman - 11 months old and Richard Emmanuel -14years old) as beneficiaries of our Prescription Assistance Program (PAP). Ayangbade is suffering from Protein Energy Malnutrition, and the doctor advised that he should be given lots of good food and beverages (which we provided immediately). Richard is suffering from Tetanus and was prescribed with "Diazepam, Genitia, IVF and CPZ." We concluded arrangements for the kids’ medications to be supplied by our partner, Juli Pharmacy.

Wesley/Wright Primary Schools
United for Kids Foundation has signed a contract worth ~N1 million Naira with LOTT Archi Consult/Mr. Jimmy Olulami to construct an “816 meters long” protective fence around the primary school. See the current situation of the school at the following link:

Almost half of the funding for this project came from the donation we received from Zebra Living (proceeds of the 2007 Zebra Ball), we thank Zebra living and all our individual donors for making this big dream come true: because of you, the kids will not be afraid of falling in and getting drowned in the dangerous canal surrounding their school anymore.

Children’s Transit Home/Lagos State Government
During one of our checks on the Children’s Transit Home in Idi-Araba, we were informed of the state Government plans to relocate the children in this facility to another place. This made us very concerned about the plight of the kids and the condition of the new location, we therefore sought audience with the State Governor and by the grace of God, we got it. Our team has met with the state commissioner for housing and senior officials in the ministry of youth, sports and welfare development twice in the past one month. We have been briefed on the reasons for the relocation, given approval to visit the proposed facility where the kids will be moved to and tasked to advise the government about what needs to be done to make the new place conducive for the kids. Our hardworking and dedicated members: Funke A, Nini, Khadijah, Bimbo B, Ngozi, Amani and Folasade visited the proposed facility in Isheri last weekend and have given us feedback, which we will pass on to the Lagos State Government.

We feel very blessed to be used by God as a tool to help these otherwise voiceless citizens get a better deal in life, we are grateful for your support and hope you will continue to spread the word about our mission. Thank you very much and God bless!

March 2008 News...

Dear Friends,United for Kids Foundation held its monthly visit to the pediatric wards of the Ikeja General Hospital and Ayinke house on Saturday March 15th 2008 thanks to the following people who took time out of their busy schedules to make it happen: Ibrabeem, Amani, Khadijah, Tope F, Lanre F, Funke A, Anuoluwapo S, Ugoma, Omakolo,Seun F, Adesuwa and her adorable twins, Mr Olukoya, Aminat, Mama Ariyo and Folasade. In addition to donating their time, Funke, Lanre, Adesuwa, Mr Olukoya and Ugoma also gave cash donations during the visit. We thank you all for your support and pray that
God rewards you abundantly. As usual, we distributed groceries and supplies to the children on admission at Ayinke houseand the main hospital wards, we also selected three patients (Ajuwon Ayodele, Amara Ukelonu and Olanrewaju Ayomide), all less than 1 year old and diagnosed with meningitis for sponsorshipunder the UKF Prescription Assistance Program (PAP), the costs of their prescriptions have been covered by UKF.The visit to the Ikeja GH provided a good opportunity for members present to thank Ugoma of Zebra Living for her generosity (the proceeds from the
December 2007 Zebra Ball was donated to UKF). We also got an update on the fund raising efforts by Mama Ariyo for the second/final surgery needed by Ariyo in the UK (they are awaiting final approval from the Lagos and Ogun State Governments in order to receive the donations promised). Other News:After the visit, a couple of members went to Wesley and Wright primary school in Somolu to assess the extent of work needed in the school and to meet with two contractors being considered for the fencing work. The extent of work needed is enormous, but we have decided to tackle them in manageable phases. We hope to select a final contractor for the fencing work and begin work by April 1st. UKf continues to support the Children’s transit home (CTH), we have provided the monthlysupply of charcoal and will be paying the common entrance fees and extra coaching sessions

UKF News – February 2008

Dear Friends,

We thank God for sparing our lives and keeping our mission alive. Our second visit to the Ikeja General Hospital children’s wards in 2008 took place on February 16th 2008 thanks to the following people who took time out of their busy schedules: Ibrabeem, Amani, Khadijah, Ngozi, Toritse Orubu, Lanre, Nini, Mr. and Mrs. Bukky Adeniran, Mr. and Mrs. Ayo Salami, Mama Ariyo and Folasade. As usual, we distributed groceries to children in the pediatric wards and in Ayinke house; we also selected the following five patients for the UKF Prescription Assistance Program (PAP):
· Ajuwon Ayodele (10 months old), Amara Ukelonu (11 months old) and Adeyemi Ridwan (6months old), all diagnosed with Meningitis and prescribed with Augmentin Syrup (Ajuwon & Amara) and 320g Cetotaxine (Adeyemi).
· Dasim Amatel (6yrs old HIV positive male patient) diagnosed with acute hepatitis, and prescribed with 750g cetotaxine syrup.
· Joseph Ifeoluwa (a 1 month old infant abandoned by his mother) whose right leg was amputated (Neonatal Gangene), prescribed with IV Flagyl, 80mg Genticin Injection, and some clinical tools (crape bondage, sterile dressing pack and yellow cannula).
There is apparently a lot of work that needs to be done at this hospital for the poor and sick kids, we pray that God continues to touch your hearts to give us both time and money to get this done.

Update on Wesley and Wright Primary School:
We are determined not to be overwhelmed or discouraged by the enormous amount of work that needs to be done at this school. Our team visited the school last week and have decided to postpone work on classroom reconstruction/roofing at this point because of the huge costs involved and because of more urgent needs at the place. We are now making plans to erect a protective fence around the school facility because of the danger posed by an exposed canal right behind the school compound, to check the constant influx of ‘area boys’ into the school and curb truancy. We expect this to cost us approximately 1 million Naira. When we are done with this project, we intend to construct a borehole and toilet facilities for the staff and pupils.

Our next visit to the Ikeja General Hospital will take place, by God’s grace on Saturday March 15th 2008 at 9am, please mark your calendars and make plans to join us.

Q1 Donations – Please spare a change for the needy this pay day..

Dear Friends,

We are on the match again in 2008 and are ready to begin various ‘healing’ missions on your behalf. We want to start by repairing the roofs at Wesley and Wright primary Schools in Somolu, Lagos (estimated cost is N1.3 million), and we cannot fund this without your generosity, please help us put a roof over the heads of these wonderful kids before the rains start in a few weeks. We also delivered beautiful clothes donated by “keep the orphans nice and warm” foundation of Ireland to the kids at Hearts of Gold. In addition to these activities, we successfully conducted our first visit to the Ikeja General Hospital (IGH) on Saturday, January 19 2008 thanks to the following people who took time out of their busy schedules to make it happen: Mummy Adebiyi, Mr. Olukoya, Mummy Ositade, Ibraheem, Khadijah, Ngozi, Nini, Shola Afolabi, Toritse Orubu, Omobola Ositade, Murphy Pelumi-Balogun and Folasade. The following patients were selected for the UKF Prescription Assistance Program (PAP) during the IGH visit: Babies Kareem, Michael and Ayube, 3 female patients who were born prematurely and required Cefolexine, Genticin, Ferbelan, Pre Nan and Abidec drops. We also sponsored Ibrahim Ajarat, 6 year old female patient diagnosed with Septicemia and required Chloramphenicol and Erythromycin Tab. The details of these patients were taken to Juli pharmacy for them to pick up their medications later in the day. Our next visit to IGH will be on February 16th, 2008. We made N4 million in 2007!!!!

Dear Friends,
When we shared the exciting news at the end of 2006 that we grossed N2 million (Naira) that year, we had no idea that God had bigger and better things in store for us in 2007. He pleasantly surpised us once again in the year 2007, YOU helped us double 2006 figures, we are pleased to announce that we grossed over N4 million in 2007! We have come a long way from ~N20,000 total donations in 2002, this growth really shows us that God is in support of what we are trying to do.

We are setting our sight really high in 2008, please send us your Q1-2008 donations, so that we can start building a roof for the kids at Wesley/Wright Primary school before the rain starts in March. United for Kids Foundation held its annual Eid Kabir (Adha) party for the kids at Bab Es Salaam orphanage in Lagos on Saturday January 05, 2008. The kids had a lot of fun and are very grateful for the gifts, love and presence of the following members: The Adenirans, Ayo Salami & family, The Oyewales, Olukoyas, Ngozi, Amani, Folasade, Lanre, Khadijah, Bimbo and Ibraheem.
As usual, Alhaja Ganiyah Adebanjo anchored the program, which included games, songs and quizzes for the kids. We also donated clothes to the kids courtesy of the kind hearted Nigerians in Ireland dedicated to keeping orphans nice and warm. Pictures and Stories to wrap up a wonderful year.....

Dear Friends,

On behalf of all the trustees and kids we support, I will like to thank you for a very wonderful year (2007). We wrapped up our activities for the year during the weekend of December 14th. Our trustee, Adesuwa Ladoja represented us at the Zebra Ball in Lagos on Friday Dec14th, we visited the Ikeja General Hospital (IGH) on Saturday Dec. 15th and wrapped things up on a happy note with the Xmas party for orphaned and sick kids held at the Hearts of Gold Hospice (HOG) in Lagos.

Here are some of the highlights:

As usual at IGH, we distributed groceries and supplies to the kids on admission. We also gave groceries to the nurses and other members of staff at the hospital, Hearts of Gold hospice, Lagos State Motherless Babies Home (LMBH) and the children's transit home (CTH) to show our appreciation for their support and for taking care of the kids during the year.

Last month, the hospital welfare team informed Fola, our staff coordinator about an abandoned pregnant teenager, she later delivered her baby shortly before our December visit. We donated some items needed for mother and baby during out visit.

Five patients were selected for the UKF Prescription Assistance Program (PAP): Baby Salabiu, a 21 day old female patient who was diagnosed with Intestinal Obstruction and required Isomil and Vermil (Elemental Diet) medications. Akinyele Omoleye, 5 year old Male, diagnosed with Encepholitis required one bottle of Syrup Encephanol and one bottle of Syrup Astymin. Ajiki Iyanu, 9 year old Male had a ruptured appendix and was prescribed with Augmentin tablets 375mg and Astyfen Syrup. Hameed Suliat, 3 year old Female had Buvkitt’s Lymphore and needed 10 bottles of Etoposide Injection. Aminat Kolawole, 8 year old Female, required anti retro viral drugs.

The IGH story cannot be complete without expressing our gratitude to everyone who took time out of their busy schedule to help us share groceries, smiles and hope. We will like to thank: Mrs Adebiyi, Mrs Adewale (for coming and donating towards our causes as well), Mrs Olukoya, Adesuwa, Remi O, Ibrabeem, Amani, Khadijah, Ngozi, Ify N, Toritse O, Mobolaji D, Omobola O, Adesola O,and Folasade. We organised her annual Christmas party for the kids living in LMBH, HOG and CTH. The party was held at HOG's premises in Surulere, Lagos. We will like to thank everyone who took time to organise the best party we have had for the kids so far. We are also extremely grateful to the individuals who gave us money and other resources that made this day very special for the kids who are often neglected at times like this.

The kids at CTH attended the Xmas party for the first time ever! May God bless the wonderful woman who provided a school bus for their transportation to and from their home in Idi-Araba.

1000 steps forward in less than two months……

In September 2007, we (UKF) brought you this and other pictures from of Adebule Primary School Somolu, Lagos.

Less than two months after, we are proud to present a new picture, a sample of what your generous donations and the invaluable efforts of our trustees have done so far.

On behalf of everyone involved with UKF, I will like to thank Ibraheem A, who worked day and night inspite of his busy schedule to coordinate the beautiful work we have been able to do here. I will also like to thank Adesuwa L for funding a very significant part of this work and getting her friends to do same.

In addition to the roofing/ceiling work done, we installed a new borehole, deepened the well, provided a new water tank, pipes, taps, toilet facilities and contracted a carpenter to make 50 new desks and benches for the kids. We have spent over N700,000 on these things because YOU have financially supported us. Water and shelter are basic needs of life and for helping us provide these needs to the poorer population in our society, may God bless you all.

Routine Visits:

On November 17th 2007, our team visited the Ikeja General Hospital Children's wards. We are grateful to Nini, Bimbo, Fola and Ibraheem for handling the shopping as usual. The turnout was great thanks to: The Olukoyas, Bopo, Ibraheem, Nini, Babatunde, Sekinat, Olabopo, Olanrewaju, Khadijah, Aminat & Ayo S, Tope YA, Ngozi, Bimbo, Amani & Family and Folasade who took time out of their busy schedules to help provide relief to the kids and their families, may God bless you all. We provided groceries/supplies and also selected three patients for sponsorship under our "prescription assistance program," unfortunately our partner pharmacy, Juli did not stock two of the patients' prescriptions.

On November 24th 2007, we visited the Children's transit home in Idi-Araba thanks to Aminat S (who also took care of the shopping), Tope S and Fola D, May God reward you all. We presented the usual groceries/supplies to the home and discussed their needs with the head official. As you will see in the pictures we took (see Kodak gallery link below), the ceilings/roofs and playground equipment need to be repaired, and the kids need textbooks. We intend to help the home with these items by God's grace, please don't forget to send us your donations so that we can do this in good time.

Upcoming events

December 15th & 16th: We will officially wrap up our 2007 activities on Sunday, 16th of December. We will be visiting the Ikeja General Hospital kids' wards on Saturday (Dec. 15th) at 9am, this is our last visit in 2007 and your chance to be a part of this great cause, all you need to do is show up with a smile for the sick and help us hand out groceries. On Sunday 16th, we will be holding our annual Xmas party for the kids at Hearts of Gold hospice (57 Adebola st, off Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere Lagos), the kids at the Children's Transit Home, Idi-Araba and the Lagos State Motherless babies home in lekki phase 1 will also be attending this party. Donations, hospital visit and the rest of 2007....

As we make our 'final descent' into the end of 2007, UKF will like to thank you for your support so far and ask for your help in making more dreams come true during the last days of 2007. As you know, we greatly appreciate your financial contributions, but perhaps what we need much more right now is your time to help us spend the money in the right places. October 2007 IGH Visit:
Our first activity of the quarter took place at the Ikeja General Hospital last week Saturday (October 20th, 2007), members turn out was discouraging, but we thank Nini, Bimbo, Khadijah, Ngozi, Tope S, Amani and Ibraheem for consistently making it happen at IGH. As usual we distributed packs of supplies to children in Ayinke house and the general wards. We sponsored the medication of the following kids (through our partnership with Juli Pharmacy): AJAYI Michael (5 year with Osteomyelitics who needed antibiotics), NWOKIKIE Ezinne (4 months Old with Retroviral Infection, needed antibiotics) and Yussuf Sulaiman (12 year old with Meningitis, needed antibiotics).

Our monthly visit to IGH continues to be a humbling experience and our biggest opportunity to reach out and give hope to those who need it the most, please find time to join the remaining visits for 2007 coming up on November 17 and December 15 by God's grace.

Eid Kabir and Xmas Parties:
In addition to visiting the hospital, we also plan to hold our annual Xmas party for the children at Hearts of Gold Hospice in Surulere with the kids at the Lagos State Motherless Babies Home and the Children's Transit Home in attendance. We will also organize an Eid Kabir party at the Bab Es Salaam orphanage. Both parties are planned for the weekend of December 14th, please make plans to share love and blessings with the ones who need them most during these important times. We will send more details as we get closer.

State of the Schools:
A couple of weeks ago, we brought you stories/pictures from three public primary schools in Lagos, Nigeria (Adebule, Wesley and Wright schools) and mentioned our intention to make things better for the kids. With God on our side and the dedication of one of our most selfless members, Ibraheem, we have started working at Adebule Primary School. Ibraheem has taken time off his extremely busy schedule to meet with school officials, get plumbers/contractors and get work has started on the staff room and the water/sanitary system. As expected with Government run establishments in Nigeria, we are facing a lot of bureaucratic problems and the financial scope of the budget has increased by about N120,000 in the first week alone. However, we are trying to stay focused on the end goal, which is making the children more comfortable.

We have the financial resources to do more at Adebule and also start working at Wesley/Wright schools, but we lack the human resources to help us oversee the work there, so if you can spare an hour or two any day, please let us know and we will work something out for these kids together.

We thank God for bringing you into our lives and for giving us the opportunity to be 'there' for those who don't have as much as we do. May God forgive our shortcomings bless us all!

Dear friends,

Thank God for yet another trip to the Ikeja General Hospital on September 15, 2007 courtesy of Ibrabeem, Nini, Amani, Khadijah, Lola I, Biliqis B, Hakeem, Lanre, Folasade and Bolaji (Folasade’s sister who graciously assisted with the shopping). As usual, we distributed groceries and supplies to the kids in the premature babies’ wards at Ayinke house and the children’s wards in the main hospital. We also continued our prescription assistance program (UKF-PAP) through Juli pharmacy. The following patients were selected as September’s beneficiaries:

Ester Oduenyi, a female patient diagnosed with Pulmonary Tuberculoses. The doctors prescribed “3packets Cefuroxine (750mg) per day,” UKF covered one week’s supply of this prescription.
Emmanuel Ani, an 8 month old male surgical patient needed “120mg Ceftazinduine,” we covered 4 bottles, which should last for a week.
Bamiduro Ayomikun, a female patient who had Retinoblastoma (Retino Glaucoma - her eye was coming out of its socket). A prescription is expected to be made on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
These patients’ names were taken to Juli Pharmacy for their mothers to pick up the prescriptions later on Saturday, except for Bamiduro, whose mom will go to Juli Pharmacy on Wednesday, September 19th after it has been prescribed by the Doctor.

We will like to thank the following kind hearted people for their donations during the visit:

Lola I gave us two bags of clothes (for babies aged 2 to 12 months), we will take these clothes to Hearts of Gold hospice next week by God’s grace.
Lanre D gave us several packs of candy for the kids, we intend to share this among the kids in HOG, CTH and BES orphanages next week as well.
Biliqis B and Morayo R gave us cash donations.
Mrs. Taiwo Ogunsola, who was passing by decided to support our work. She gave us a check of N25,000.
Adesuwa L, for donating a beautiful camera to UKF. We like getting pictures to our audience so that you can see what you have helped create and what still needs to be done, therefore this camera is a much needed asset to grow our mission.

We have several projects lined up for the last quarter of the year, which starts in October. We intend to begin work on the primary schools, hold our annual Xmas and Eid Kabir parties and also continue our regular programs. Please send us your Q4 donations as soon as you are able, and as for those who have not giving us anything this year, please help us support the poor, sick and needy….may God support you too.

Everyday I complain about the spate of armed robbery in Nigeria, but I never traced the menace to the school environment until recently. How on earth can some kids be subjected to these environment and then watch us live in luxury? In the past few days, our foundation (www.unitedforkidsfoundation.org) has gone round three Lagos schools to see things for ourselves and we are still trying to recover from the shock of it all. We estimate that we will need close to N3m ($24,000 dollars) to put these places in decent shape, our goal is to spend the next 15 months transforming these schools. To get this, we are going to embark on the most aggressive fund raising effort ever.

Dressing them up and spending $$$ + August 25....

Dear Friends,

As usual, we visited the Ikeja General Hospital children’s wards last weekend. Our reliable and consistent members: Adesuwa, Bimbo, Nini, Aminat, Tope S, Tola T and Folasade were present, and so were our new friends: Seyi A, Fatima S and a long time supporter all the way from Port Harcourt, Teslim B. In addition to spending their time with us on Saturday, these wonderful people also donated a total sum of N15,000, most of which we gave out to patients in need of financial assistance. May God bless you all for your time, money and sacrifices.

In addition to the usual groceries, we gave out some of the beautiful clothes donated to us by our kind hearted friends dedicated to “keeping the orphans nice and warm” all the way from Ireland. The kids and their family greatly appreciate what you have done for them; unfortunately the hospital matrons did not allow pictures, so we cannot share some of their joy with you in ‘color.’

Five patients benefited from our extra Prescription Assistance Program: We made a commitment to help Ahmed Nifemi (a 1 year old female with hydrocephalus, first phase of the surgery costs N100K), and Rasheed Ayoola (a three year old boy who needs to undergo an Audio logical Assessment which costs N21,000). We provided cash assistance to Adeniyi Fatia (a two year old sickle cell patient), Favor Omodiebe (a four month old girl with Hypertysis) and Bosede Julius (an 11 year old girl that has some kidney/heart problems). We are keeping our promise to Miss Nifemi and Master Ayoola; today, we withdrew the sum of N123,000 to take care of Nifemi’s surgery and Ayoola’s assessment. As I write this, Folasade, our staff coordinator is at the hospital making 'it' happen.

We are extremely grateful and will like to thank Adesuwa’s sister for her selflessness. She has visited Hearts of Gold Hospice and the Lagos State Motherless babies home to help deliver more clothes and to take pictures of the delighted kids in their new clothes. The process of dressing up the kids continue this Saturday, August 25, 2007 at the Children’s Transit Home (behind LUTH in Idi-Araba), please make time to join this visit starting at 2pm. We look forward to seeing you and your friends there.

We will not visit HOG this weekend because we have been ‘there’ already this week through Adesuwa’s sister and we have paid ~N200K to our contractor to lay nice tiles on the floors at hospice, work commenced on this project on Monday and should be completed shortly.

We would never be able to do all these without your support, so we thank God for you and hope that you will continue to keep your promises to us and the kids.

July 2007 visit to the Ikeja General Hospital: As usual, our team visited the children’s wards of the Ikeja GH, including Ayinke house, on Saturday, July 21 2007. A record number of members (15) took time out of their busy schedule to make this visit a reality. We sincerely thank Sola, Bimbola A, Khadijah, Ngozi, Bimbo B, Moji, Akeem, Amani, Adesuwa & the twins, Obinna, Tope S, Folasade, Mommy Adebiyi and Ekanem for their support.

We gave out the usual groceries and selected four patients as beneficiaries of the Prescription Assistance Program (PAP) for July 2007: Esther Bolaji (Hydrocephalus), Samson Orimisun (Bronchi Pneumonia), Eze Lucky (Meningitis) and John Blessing, a two month old baby girl who needed to undergo a CT scan for Hydrocephalus. We paid N35,000 for Blessing’s CT scan and ensured that Lucky got his drugs from Juli pharmacy, unfortunately Esther passed away on Sunday, July 22 2007.

Our monthly visits to IGH have shown the prevalence of hydrocephalus and the need for the hospital to have its own CT scan equipment; we hope that with your help, we will be able to do a lot in this regard.

UKF Structures in Lagos & USA: Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Segun Ojo, a friend of one of our trustees, we should be setting up our ‘shop’ ‘free of charge’ on Ikorodu Road (Obanikoro area) in Lagos shortly. We are also grateful to KPMG Nigeria for the donation of a laptop for our use. We are now in the market for ‘free’ internet access; please contact us (unitedforkids@gmail.com) if you can help this dream come true.

The final determination of our tax exempt status in the USA should occur in less than a month, we have been in touch with the IRS and there have been no issues with our application so far, we will let you know as soon as we get a final decision.

The way forward/Q3 calendar: We will greatly appreciate your support as we start our busiest month of the quarter: August 2007. Stepping on solid ground in CTH, Clothes on our backs + UKF in a fashion show?

Q2-2007 will perhaps go down in UKF history as one of the quarters we 'lived' our dreams to the fullest, thanks to YOU. We had a record amount of new subscribers to the mailing list, financial donors and most importantly good people who stood up to help our mission. Here are highlights of some events that happened in June 07:

Despite the challenges posed by the fuel shortage in Nigeria, we visited the Ikeja General Hospital Children's wards on Saturday June 16th. Our able crew included: Mummy Adebiyi, Nini, Sheriff, Bimbo, Adesuwa (supported by our youngest members - her twin daughters), Khadijah, Folashade, Sola G, Ekanem O, Bidemi J, Obinna U, Ibraheem and Hakeem. We are pleased to welcome our new members and hope that you will stay with us. As usual, we distributed groceries and supplies to the infants in Ayinke house and children's wards 1-3. Three patients were selected for our Prescription Assistance Program (UKF-PAP) for June 2007: Samuel Arepo, Jamiu Abeeb and Aina Shadia. Jamiu and Aina required antibiotics while Samuel required a CT scan for his swollen head.

We were blessed by the thoughtfulness of a couple of good friends this month: a set of Nigerian twins based in Ireland decided to organize clothes drives for the benefit of the kids we support, if you or anyone you know in the UK area will like to support these efforts, please send an email to Khadijah at keeptheorphansniceandwarm@yahoo.co.uk. We also received with joy and appreciation news that Lshandi, a fashion label in the Washington Dc area is organizing a fashion show and part of the proceeds from gate fees will be donated to UKF, for details, please see http://www.lshandi.com/

We are continuously challenged by your trust and eagerness to support our projects/mission. This really encourages us to break new grounds. Earlier this week, we received an email from a Nigerian religious association in Ireland asking us how much it costs to support an orphan for one day. This is an area we have never explored, mainly because we do not run any orphanages, but the question has brought lots of great ideas for us to work on.

Remember the pictures of the bad flooring and laundry area at CTH that we sent last month? Your donations have helped us to turn things around at CTH, the kids will now be stepping on nice tiled floors and washing their clothes in a good laundry area with proper drainage. We hope to bring you pictures of the new CTH shortly.
Ariyo, the pediatric urology patient we have been helping since 2005 has undergone two minor surgeries in the UK, he is on a three week bed rest right now and will undergo more procedures in the near future. Please keep Ariyo and family in your prayers, may God heal him and everyone of us.
We have finalized plans to employ a coordinator for our Lagos operations, we will be making a formal announcement in Q3-2007 by the grace of God. We expect to be able to do more projects now that we have a dedicated staff and also expect to pick up donations from the offices of donors that have been too busy to get their donations across to us in the past.

We are counting our blessings during this remarkable month of May…..

My dear friends, May 2007 has been a great month for all of us at UKF, we conducted 4 visits this month: the Ikeja General Hospital children’s wards (IGH) on May 19th, the Bab Es Salaam orphanage (BES) on May 20th, the Children’s Transit Home (CTH) on May 26th and the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice (HOG) on May 27th. Here are the highlights of these and other events:

We will like to thank all those who made these visits happen, those who defied the bad weather and personal commitments to make the visits, folks who have been there since day 1 and keep coming back, we welcome those who came for the first time, we pray that you will continue to support us with your time, may God bless you all.

This month, we were blessed with so many individual acts of selflessness; one of our members donated a water heater to be installed in HOG’s bathroom. Another member gave us a major share of the huge cash award she won at her office for us to buy/install air conditioning systems in HOG and help renovate CTH.

The visit to BES was a bit disappointing as only one person showed up, we thank this hardworking trustee, and ask God to reward his efforts.

The turnout at IGH was much better, we had: Ibrahim A, Bukky A (Mr.), Tope Y-A, Tope S., Funke, Ngozi, Lanre F, Taiwo O, Amani, Akeem, Aminat, Ayo, Chika, Bimbo, Nini and Sheriff - Thank you very much people, God bless you. We made deliveries at both Ayinke House and main hospital children wards as usual. This visit also marked the beginning of our patients'' prescription assistance programme (UKF-PAP).

UKF-PAP involves an agreement with Juli pharmacy to provide medication to selected patients at a discount to UKF and free of charge to the patients. We chose Juli for its reputation as well as the proximity to the hospital. Now that parents pick up the medication from Juli (UKF pays), we hope to eliminate the risk of patients’ parents diverting our cash donations to meet other needs apart from the kids’ medication.

In addition to an abandoned baby required Zinacef injections, we sponsored the following children under the UKF-PAP in May 2007.Shazeem Olanrewaju - We had met this child during one of our past visits, we gathered that fluid had started gathering around the area of the thoracic surgery he had when we first met him. Prescription for him was Fortum 500mg antibiotic. Sinat Adebayo - The prescription was Zinnat & Flagyl (syrup). Muiz Adeleke – This child had cerebral malaria and meningitis, he required Cefriazone. In all cases, we bought drugs and provided money that would take care of treatment till Monday 21st when the pharmacy will be open for them to collect the remaining dosages.

At IGH, we also came across a child with a hole in the heart - Sukurat Rasaki whose surgery needs to be done in India. The GT Bank account details for help are: 2392229301590. Dr. (Mrs.) Erinosho is in-charge of patient and can be reached on: 08033524473.

After two years on being involved with Ariyo (the pediatric urology patient we met at IGH), we are happy to report that Ariyo and his mom are now in the UK for his surgery, their first appointment will be on May 29th. May God bless the trustees and others who worked tirelessly to make this happen, we pray for a successful surgery.

The turnout at HOG was fantastic despite the scheduling challenges and bad weather; many thanks to Ngozi, Adesuwa, Khadijah, Amani, Temitope S and Funke. There are more children with all manners of deformities in HOG now. Some are scheduled for surgery at St Nicholas at no cost to HOG. We toured the new building and noted that one of the bedrooms and the living room area are in need of some serious work. The tiles need replacing and they need about 10 double-decker beds, we hope to help out in this area.

I decided to leave the most overwhelming one for last, that is, the visit to the CTH. We will like to thank Mommy Adebiyi, Tony, Adesuwa, Amani, Lanre, Ngozi, Funke and family for anchoring this very important visit. Hello everyone,

On behalf of the kids we 'work for', I will like to thank you all for your overwhelming generousity during the first three months of 2007. We have raised over N800,000 which represents >40% of what we raised all through 2006. This is yet another indication that this is going to be a blessed year for us.
Our major expenditure in Q1-2007 include N300,000 spent on monthly visits to the Ikeja General Hospital (groceries and supplies for patients), over N140,000 for Eid party for the Bab Es Salam kids and N70,000 for payment of staff salaries at the Hearts of Gold Hospice.

Q1-2007: A perfect beginning by God's grace

Dear Members,

On behalf of all the trustees and Governors of United for Kids Foundation (UKF), I will like to thank you for your invaluable support during a very eventful and fulfilling quarter (Q1-2007), may God reward your generosity abundantly. We achieved quite a lot by God’s grace this quarter: we brought smiles to many faces at the Ikeja General Hospital (IGH), the Bab Es Salaam Children’s orphanage (BES), the Hearts of Gold Hospice (HOG) and the Children’s Transit Home (CTH). In addition, we incorporated UKF in the State of Maryland, USA and are almost finalizing plans to roll out our UKF Prescription Assistance Program (UKF-PAP) for less privileged patients at the IGH. Please read details of these and more “in the words” of our trustees who volunteered their time to make dreams come true.

IGH:
We visited IGH on January 20th, February 17th and March 17th 2007. We are extremely grateful to the trustees and members who consistently spared their time and money to do the shopping and make the visits happen. We continued our practice of providing groceries and supplies to the kids in the children’s and premature babies’ wards. In January, we were able to partner with a pharmacy to provide prescribed medication to a patient with cancer of the blood. As usual, we used “on the spot cash” donated by members to help stranded pediatric patients and their families: we were able to provide pampers and baby formula for an abandoned baby during February’s visit and In March, we shared N14,000 among kids who had Meningitis, Typhoid, Respiratory problems and Malaria.
With the state of medical care facilities, increasing cases of child abandonment and poverty, we have realized that there is a lot of work for people like us to do at IGH; we hope you will continue to support us and join our visits so that we can cover more ground in the future.

BES:
Once again, we want to thank the members who helped us ensure that the children at BES were not left out of the Eid Kabir festivities this year. HOG:
The quote, “One of the most amazing things in life is being the surprise answer to another person’s prayers”, really sums up what happened to us in February. With the two trustees in charge of HOG out of state, we were on the verge of disappointing the kids by canceling/rescheduling the Q1 visit, but by the grace of God and with the help of two wonderful members who stepped up to the plate, we had one of the most inspiring visits ever. Armed with the knowledge that staffing cost is a major challenge to HOG, we contributed a token of N70,000 to help with payment of staff salaries. Here are excerpts from the visit report written by Tope S. that completely melted by heart: “.. She had also just admitted an abandoned child that afternoon, the child (a girl) is about 5 months old; has hydrocephaly and was abandoned in a market place. The abandoned child was quite hungry as she ate quite voraciously when the nurse on duty gave her some milk, the poor girl must have been abandoned since morning…. The proprietor, Mrs. Laja estimated that she had about 32 kids in all with her at the moment but was very happy to tell us that 5 of her kids had been adopted in the last year and moved to various countries (Paris; Holland; Italy (2); and Germany)…There was only one nurse on duty and Mrs. Laja mentioned that Sundays especially can be a bit challenging for her as most of her staff want to go to church and spend time with their families. …We took a look at the 2nd building and apart from painting Mrs. Laja says they're all set…. the entire visit went well and it just reminded us again that a little love goes a long way for these little ones.”
If you can volunteer some time, HOG is located at 57 Adebola St, Off Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere, Lagos. I am sure they will appreciate your time.

CTH:
On February 24, 2007, the two trustees in charge of CTH took time out of their extremely busy schedules to make more dreams come true at the home in Idi-Araba. They monitored the progress of our projects in the home: The repairs of the mosquito nets had been completed, we are proud and thankful that with this, we will be helping the fight against malaria in that home. The trustees also noted that the classes we helped renovate are being well maintained. They delivered 4 bags of charcoal for cooking, 3 gallons of disinfectant, 12 bottles of Dettol and 12 chairs and 6 Tables for the Nursery classes during this visit.
We noted that CTH’s water well had dried up once again and the children had begun fetching water outside the home. In order to prevent severe damage to the pumping machine, which we repaired in 2006, our team immediately contacted a reliable plumber who moved to site with a digging crew to deepen the well. Although the cost of this project was just N23,000, we realized the importance of visiting at the time we did, had we not gone to CTH, these kids would have continued exposing themselves to danger by going out to the unsafe neighborhood to fetch water and the pumping machine would have been damaged. We really look forward to having the pleasure of your company during our visit to this home, which is one of our most important and vulnerable projects.
In Q2-2007, we hope to provide more text books for the kids, concretize the laundry area, install floor tiles in the common room, renovate existing play ground (provide swings, metal horse, etc.) and complete the last phase of the portable water distribution network. May God help us.

Other issues:
One of the things that gave us joy this quarter was the successful incorporation in the USA. United for Kids Foundation, Inc. is now a recognized entity in the state of Maryland, we have also been provided with a Federal Employer ID (Tax ID), we are now processing our tax exempt status, so that the donations you make to us will be tax deductible when you file your annual tax returns. We have had major discussions and negotiations with two pharmacies near the IGH and are very close to kicking off our prescription assistance program. With this program, we will eliminate the risk of patients’ parents/guardians using the money we give them to meet other needs unrelated to buying drugs for the sick kids we aim to help. We found divine favor during our negotiations and hope to begin this program in Q2-2007, may God bless the trustees who worked tirelessly and refused to give up when things seemed deadlocked and unsure.
We are still supporting Ariyo, the pediatric Urology patient we met in 2004. In March 2007, we gave his mother N3,500 to pay for his lesson fees. We are also helping out with logistics and arrangements to fly him abroad for a much needed surgery. One of our dedicated trustees has been able to secure appointments for Ariyo in a good London hospital (Johns Hopkins USA declined to reschedule his earlier scheduled appointment). We are hopeful that Ariyo and his mother will obtain UK visas shortly and proceed to London for the surgery. We sincerely thank everyone that has helped UKF help this woman and her sick child.

Hello everyone and hope the year is living up to its billing as the greatest year yet. For us at UKF, its been an amazing year, one of the most interesting trends we have noticed is the emergence of a passionate band of new volunteers. We were afraid that a lot of older members would 'fade off' and affect our dreams, but God has been faithful and consistent.

We thank God for his mercies, but I really want to ask YOU reading this email, Are you one of those who promised God that you will chip in your bit to help heal Nigeria and indeed the World, one child at a time, but faded and got tired? I sincerely hope you are not, it does not matter how long ago you gave your time and money towards helping UKF's cause, its time for you to take your place and remove your name from those who have been replaced by God.

Greatest year-to-date + a lesson for those abroad….

Hello everyone,

It’s just a few days into the New Year and we are already seeing signs of this being UKF’s biggest year yet by God’s grace.
Our first hospital visit was very inspiring in terms of lives touched and members’ turnout (please see Ibraheem’s report below). Two of our members taught me a great lesson: the fact that we are not physically in Nigeria should not stop us from giving our time, they are in the US but their mom attended the IGH visit on their behalf.
Last week, we formally initiated procedures to register the foundation as a tax exempt entity in the state of Maryland, USA. Please join us in praying for a smooth process.
We have been able to secure a hospital appointment at Johns Hopkins Hospital (USA) for Ariyo (the 10 year old Urology patient we met in 2004), the estimated cost of his treatment is over $40,000, indeed this is a lot of money but the sources of funds are promising and we hope this kid and his mom will have the cause to smile and thank God very soon.
As you will see in Ibraheem’s report below, we are planning to start our prescription assistance program for patients in Q1-2007, our plan is to partner with a pharmacy that will directly supply drugs to selected patients facing financial difficulties and we will pay for these directly to the pharmacy. We are hoping to commit an additional N50,000 each month to fund this program, so we desperately need your support.

Ibraheem’s report –IGH visit on January 20th 2007

Our first visit for the year 2007 went very well. First I’d say we were highly honored by the presence and active participation of a Grandmother and Mother in the person of Mrs Bukky Adewale (standing in for two of her children in the USA). It was a great experience with her around us. We say thanks for being there. We started a bit late on Saturday 20th January 2007 with Nini taking care of the shopping. In attendance were Tope Sowande, Nini, Khadijah, Lanre Arikebi, Adesuwa, Bimbo (Caraale pharmacy), Amani, Sheriff, Hakeem, Bashir Bello and myself (Ibraheem). Ariyo & Mum also gave us support.

We did the packaging and proceeded to Ayinke house and the children’s' wards. The distribution also went well and we did have some left over packs because of fewer patients. The left over packs have been kept for distribution during the February visit.

A sum of =N=12,500 was contributed to attend to the needs of five patients. Out of these five patients, there was no priority case except for a patient with cancer of the blood. We were able to get the list of required drugs from the mother/nurse and Bimbo promised to deliver the drugs to the patient within the week. We gave Bimbo =N=2,500 cash and promised to settle the balance later.

Another major point was our discussion with Bimbo (Caraale pharmacy). The summary is that Bimbo's presence made a difference in our path to achieving the UKF drug assistance scheme. However, there was concern on abuse of this opportunity by both nurses and patients, we intend to mitigate this as we get along.

All we can do is thank God and show our genuine appreciation to you for your generosity. Please find enclosed a summary of our financial statements for the year 2006.

Our revenue increased from N1.1M in 2005 to N2.4M in 2006; with this increase in financial strength, we were able to do more for the kids at the Ikeja General Hospital, where we spent over N100,000 each month. We also spent over N500,000 in 2006 rehabilitating the Children's Transit Home in Idi-Araba, and we have only just begun by God's grace. Lets Celebrate Eid Kabir all over again!

We drew the curtains on 06, Thank you!

The monthly visit to IGH and the Xmas party at HOG marked the end of 'formal' activities UKF had planned for the year 2006. We want to express our gratitude to all those who made 2006 our biggest year so far and also a sign of bigger things to come for us. As you will read from Ibraheem's report below, the IGH visit shows how much more we still need to do in order to restore hope in the lives of the poor and sick. I pray that we are able to do a lot more in 2007 and beyond.
I am happy to report that in spite of the bureaucratic issues we encountered with the Government orphanages again this year, the kids at the Lagos State Orphanage attended the party and had a very good time, the kids at hearts of Gold were perfect hosts and enjoyed themselves too.

IKeja General Hospital Visit on 12/16/2006 by Ibraheem

Our visit went well with Bimbo, Shola, Amani, Sheriff, Biola, Hakeem, Lanre and Ibraheem on ground. Shola & Biola were first timers. Ariyo & Mum were also available. We were able to cover both Ayinke House and the our other three wards. Nini & Bimbo did the shopping and we distributed packs to all patients in the ward and those awaiting to be admitted as usual. Thereafter we pulled together about N16K. We encountered two critical patients with special request/response and we attended to both in our own little way.
The first patient is a boy and incidentally he was the one we wanted to pay for his CT scan last week. The CT scan was undertaken by another Samaritan. However, the boy needs antibiotics on a daily basis to survive. He takes two dosages of the drug per day at a cost N1.6K. We gave out N4.5K being cost of drugs for about 3 days and promised to make available another one week drug expense by Wednesday 20th December. At report time, a cheque of N15k will be cashed and made available for this patient by Wednesday 20th December.
The 2nd patient (Iwunze Reward) has meningitis. His mum was helpless as we gathered from the nurses that she could not afford anything. We gave cash of about 5.5K to cater for drugs for the sick child and bought provisions for both mum and child.
We then the shared remaining contribution amongst other critical patients as our normal practice.
Another highlight on Saturday was Mr. Lawal Surakat from Port Harcourt, who was visiting his friend's sick child at the hospital. He approached us and commended our activities. He then donated N10,000 cash. This was part of the money we disbursed above.

United for Kids Foundation

Ladies and Gentlemen, Please allow me to introduce you to United for Kids Foundation (UKF), a charitable organization established exclusively for charitable and educational activities aimed principally at less privileged children in Nigeria. Our aim is to create a bridge between fortunate Nigerians and the less fortunate sick and orphaned children. Since UKF was founded in 2002, we have selected 1 teaching hospital and 4 orphanages as beneficiaries of our activities, we have partnered with them to upgrade facilities, provide financial assistance for prescription drugs/medical tests, educational materials, food, beverages and household supplies in order to alleviate the suffering and discomfort encountered by the children.

Our Mission

The UKF dream began in 1999 and became a reality in April 2002 when a group of friends/colleagues mainly from Arthur Andersen Lagos (now known as KPMG Professional Services), visited the Lagos State Motherless Babies Home, LMBH (then at Sinari Daranijo Street, Victoria Island Lagos) as “friends of the home”. That visit exposed the need for us, Nigerians to invest in nation building by reaching out to the voiceless and almost helpless orphaned and sick Nigerian children. The state of the facility at the time showed the extreme neglect these children, who hold an important key to a better Nigeria, and indeed the World were being subjected to. None of the friends could walk away from what they had seen at the orphanage that day, hence informal plans and discussions commenced in order to find a lasting means of assisting the children at LMBH and other like facilities in the country. United for Kids Foundation was therefore ‘born’ in October 2002, the group has experienced tremendous growth due to the satisfaction derived from bringing joy into the lives of the needy; “Satisfied customers” have continued to spread the word and invited others to join the mission to heal Nigeria and indeed the World, One Child, One Heart and One Smile at a time.
UKF acts as a bridge between the fortunate Nigerians and the less fortunate sick and orphaned children, we receive and make donations to needy children in state-owned hospitals, state and privately owned orphanages, public schools and other facilities in need. UKF has experienced significant growth in financial and human resources; annual donations have increased from $100 in 2002 to more than $18,000 in 2006; membership has grown from less than 10 individuals in 2002 to 300 members in Nigeria, Canada, United Kingdom and the United States of America in 2006. In the short period we have being in existence, we have learnt that the power to heal Nigeria and indeed the World lies in the hands of dedicated and kind hearted people like YOU.

Our support of these organizations vary based on their unique needs and organization. We provide groceries, toys, supplies and also organize annual parties. We assist poor patients with payment of hospital bills, prescription drugs and provide post-recovery support/assistance. We also assist some of the organizations with facilities’ renovation and expansion of infrastructure to accommodate more children and/or make the children more comfortable. With your active support and encouragement, we believe we can do a lot more in these and many other institutions. United for Kids Foundation was incorporated in the Federal Republic of Nigeria in March 2005.

Below is a brief summary of some of the programs, people and projects that have given us tremendous joy and satisfaction since we began this journey in 2002:

Quarterly Visits
UKF conducts quarterly visits to the orphanages we support, the purpose of the visits is to deliver groceries and other supplies needed to ensure well being of the children and staff. The visits also provide a great opportunity to get first hand information on ad hoc needs or problems encountered at these facilities. For instance, during one of our quarterly visits to the Lagos State Motherless Babies Home in 2005, we discovered that nine (9) of the children would not be enrolled in school for the new school session due to lack of funds, we therefore paid the school fees for these children directly to the school.
Festive Period Activities
UKF is conscious of the psychological impact of poor and orphaned children being left out of the massive festive activities during major religious holidays in Nigeria, therefore we strive to extend the love and celebration to them. UKF organizes Christmas parties for the children at the Lagos Motherless Babies Home, the Children Transit Home and the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice. In addition, we sew new clothes for the children at Bab Es Salaam Orphanage during the Eid Fitr (end of Ramadan fasting celebration) and organize a party at their facility during the Eid Kabir holiday.
Children Transit Home (CTH) Rehabilitation Project
This facility has been the most challenging of all the orphanages we have taken up. CTH is a state owned institution, which houses orphaned children between the ages of 3 and 10 who are awaiting adoption. The facility has suffered extreme neglect with poor sanitary and living conditions. However, in less than one year, UKF has provided an overhead water tank with an inbuilt water purifier to supply clean and portable water, installed ceiling fans in bedrooms and offices, continuously provided a monthly supply of charcoal for cooking as we found this to be a more cost effective measure than the use of gas, deepened existing water well, evacuated and reconstructed soak away pit/ repaired waste water lines, repaired portable water network - taps, pipes, elbows etc and repaired/re-installed faulty pumping machine.
United for Kids Foundation Education Project (UKFEP) at the CTH
As UKF became more involved with CTH, we discovered the apparent lack of investment in the children’s education. The orphans seemed to acquire no formal education while awaiting adoption, the older children who were not adopted were sent off to learn vocational skills and sent into the ‘World’ when they reached 18 years of age, this situation definitely placed these children at a disadvantage. In 2006, a Christian church in Lagos employed five teachers to provide some formal education for the children. UKF supported this effort and renovated two kindergarten classrooms, provided classroom furniture (desks, chairs, curtains, trash cans and carpets), educational materials (text and note books, white boards, learning aids and other supplies) to aid conducive learning atmosphere.
Ikeja General Hospital (IGH) Monthly Visits
One of the most rewarding activities to UKF members is the monthly visit to the Ikeja General Hospital Children’s wards. The visit which begins at 9am on the third Saturday of every month aims to bring succor to families who suffer the dual misfortune of sickness and poverty. UKF provides various supplies including diapers and formulas (for infants), chocolate beverage, milk, tissue paper, bathing soaps, drinks/juice and biscuits for older patients. The patients’ needs are overwhelming but impossible to neglect, therefore our monthly spending on groceries at IGH has increased from NGN15,000 ($115) in 2002 to NGN100,000 ($769) in 2006.
In addition to the supply of groceries, UKF donates cash to parents of patients who are unable to afford much needed prescription drugs and medical procedures required to restore their health.
Patients Pre/Post-Recovery Support/Assistance
During our monthly visits to IGH, we endeavor to look beyond the immediate needs of the patients and strive to, within our means provide financial and other support needed by the patients and their families to live more comfortably while undergoing treatment and upon their discharge. During one of our visits in 2004, we met Deborah, a 6 year old amputee living with her grand parents in a village in Ibafo Ogun State. UKF paid for Deborah’s prosthesis at Igbobi hospital, visited the family in Ogun State upon her discharge and have been investing in food, school fees and other needs to ensure that Deborah and her family live more comfortably.
In 2005, we met Ariyo, a 10 year old Urology patient who, together with his mother had been in physical and emotional pains since he got hit in the rear by a car in 2004. Ariyo requires surgery, which cannot be performed in Nigeria, UKF has invested in Ariyo’s well being by paying for medication and school fees. We have also procured international passports for Ariyo and his mother and linked them with Urologists in the UK and USA to ensure that he gets the treatment required.
Hearts of Gold (HOG) Children’s Hospice
HOG is one of the most brilliant ideas we have encountered since 2002. It is a privately owned hospice catering for orphaned children with medical challenges such as Cerebral palsy, Hydrocephalus and HIV/AIDS. UKF’s focus has shifted from providing groceries and supplies to assisting the hospice with payment of staff salaries and completing its critical building expansion, UKF has donated building materials and cash worth over NGN500,000 towards this expansion project. We were extremely honored and humbled to be presented with a Humanitarian award at the Hospice’s award ceremony in MUSON Center, Lagos on October 2006.
